RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) is the equivalent of a non-contact barcode.  An RFID setup enables simultaneous reading of all the tags in a given area based on the range of the reader and type of tag.  Reasons people use RFID include compliance, brand security, automatic order fulfillment, and process improvement.  There are many more applications for RFID (see RFID Journal).

Compliance requires the user to meet a specification, such as for the US Military (UID) or Walmart, to sell that organization's products.

In brand security, RFID protects your company, making it difficult to steal a brand-name product and replace it with a knock-off.

Automatic order fulfillment works as follows: When a product is removed from its location, the RFID reader in that area sends the information to the procurement side of an operation. This real-time reorder data ensures that the correct product mix is always available.

Some of the most successful RFID applications are in process improvement.  The RFID tags can be used to find work in process and to determine just how much work in process exists in real-time.
